Public Data Dashboard: The Amer Ari
Explore the data behind one of college golf’s most historic events—fully interactive and at your fingertips.
AMER ARI INVITATIONAL
There aren’t many better ways to shake off the holiday rust than a trip to Hawaii’s ultimate college golf paradise. The Amer Ari Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii-Hilo and led by legendary coach Earl Tamiya since 1991, has long been a favorite stop for top Division I programs. Year after year, it boasts one of the strongest fields in men’s college golf, with a tournament history riddled with future tour players and some jaw-dropping scoring.
We’ve taken a deep dive into the numbers—now, you can explore the data for yourself!

DATA DASHBOARD

Go through the (almost) complete data of one of the most historic and premier collegiate events. Have a favorite team? The dashboard lets you filter for all of your alma mater’s results and records at this event. More interested in which tour players have won here? The individual side lets you filter by player name, final position, or year, to mention a few options.
HOW TO NAVIGATE
There are two pages to the dashboard - the team and individual pages. Use the filtering pan at the top of the page to filter the data according to your curiosity.
*Refresh the page to reset all selected filters.

See something interesting in the tables and or visuals? Click on what draws your attention to filter for that parameter (certain player, team, year, etc.). For example, you can sort the individual round 3 scoring (to par) and then click on a player such as Wenyi Ding to filter exclusively on his results for that year and see both his final results in the top-left table -AND- the round-by-round raw scoring in the top-right. Simply click on that same option to undo this filtering.

NOTE: if you see a dash (-) in the player round scoring or SG, that means there is no data, either because they did not play (dashes in both columns) or we do not have the course par for that round (dash in the score column for most 1998-01 results).
We’re really excited to have this dashboard finally made publicly available! We invite you to explore and want to know what stands out to you?
A LOOK BACK AT THE HISTORY [1991-2024]
Owing to both the location and unique personality of the organizing coach, the Amer Ari has over 30 years of unbelievably rich history from annually hosting some of the top men’s teams around the country (and even more internationally). Mikkel and I touched on much of this history and Mikkel provides amazing first-hand insight into what makes this event so special in a recent post:
QUICK REQUEST FROM DAVID
I need your help! A large part of what I’m trying to do is build the ultimate archive of college golf data/history, which will eventually be available to everyone to freely explore and research the great history of this sport. If there happens to be anyone reading this who has round-by-round player data for this tournament - specifically 1992, 94, 98 - or other source materials such as old tournament results sheets, photos, or even personal recollections, I’d love to hear from you!
Thanks for reading! Please share with anyone you think might also enjoy this look into college golf history.
You can subscribe to both this newsletter as well as Mikkel’s by entering your email in the boxes below. Both have a wealth of great free content such as this post which comes straight to your inbox. If you’d like to support our work and get additional perks, there are also paid tiers available. Feel free to reach out with any questions or suggestions!
This dashboard is so cool! I’m very excited to explore the data!
